New Mail Server Information
These instructions only apply if you are using a mail program configured for IMAP to get your math mail.
The new department mail server will default to using the 'mail' directory in your math account
for storing mail folders (e.g. Sent, sent-mail). If you already
have 'mail' set as your IMAP folder, it may seem that all your mail folders have
disappeared. The instructions below will tell you how to fix this setting.
Also, only SSL connections will be allowed. If you attempt to connect without SSL for IMAP, you will be unable to check your mail until you turn SSL on.
Below are instructions for configuring your mail client to accommodate the new mail server changes.
Mozilla Thunderbird
- (Linux) Go to the 'Edit' menu and select 'Account Settings'. The 'Account Settings' window will appear.
(MacOSX/Windows) Go to the 'Tools' menu and select 'Account Settings'. The 'Account Settings' window will appear.
- Select 'Server Settings' for your math account in the 'Account Settings' window.
- Select the radio button 'SSL' under Security Settings.
- Click on the 'Advanced...' button. The 'Advanced Account Settings' window will appear.
- You may have 'mail' listed in the 'IMAP server directory' box. Delete what is there and leave the 'IMAP server directory' box blank.
- You may need to uncheck a box that reads "Show only subscribed folders" (if you see only drafts/sent/trash folders).
- Click 'OK'. You are now back at the Account Settings window.
- Click 'OK'. You are now back in Thunderbird.
- Restart Thunderbird and your mail folders will return.
OSX Mail.app
- Go to the 'Mail' menu and select 'Preferences...'. A window will appear.
- Select the 'Accounts' icon from that window.
- Select your math account under the 'Accounts' pane on the left.
- Select the 'Advanced' tab button.
- You may have 'mail' listed in the 'IMAP Path Prefix' box. Delete what is there and leave the 'IMAP Path Prefix' box blank.
- Check the 'Use SSL' box.
- Close this window.
- Restart Mail and your mail folders will return.
